Three lucky lottery players are celebrating big Christmas wins. But once you’ve had a big win the last thing you want to do is lose your ticket. Just where is the best place to safely hide your winning ticket?

It was a typical Christmas for Heather Bryan and her daughter. The Canadians from Nova Scotia  were busy wrapping presents and watching Christmas movies. Then Heather’s husband Peter told them they’d won a $2.5 million prize in the December 21, 2024 Lotto 6/49 draw.

The winning lottery ticket was then kept in a cookie jar until their winnings could be claimed. They said that hiding place was “a fitting nod to the season.”  The windfall will be used to help their family, go travelling and help local charities

Under a mattress?

Also having to hide a winning lottery ticket were an Irish syndicate from Mayo. They won €5.419 millions in the December 28 Irish Lotto draw. To keep their ticket safe, it was hidden in a magazine in an envelope under a mattress. One of the lucky winners said: “There was no way that the ticket was going missing.” Thankfully it didn’t and they were able to claim their great win. A last-minute Christmas gift led to a couple from Co Donegal winning a €199,000 lottery prize. It was Christmas Eve when a husband realised he might need to add something to the present he was going to give to his wife. That turned out to be a lottery ticket but it wasn’t checked until they were enjoying a family dinner on Boxing Day.

They joked “we might be sitting on a fortune” and that turned out to be the truth. Then came the decision how to keep their ticket safe. They decided to plant decoy tickets around their house. Meanwhile, the actual winning ticket was hidden in a book.
