UK National Lottery seeking change with a new operator

More changes are afoot for the UK National Lottery as they search for a new operator. The current license expires in 2023 and prospective operators are being invited to apply.

Camelot have been the sole operator of the lottery in the UK since it began in 1994. Recently British MPs have suggested that a new operator should be looking to create a lottery which is looking towards the future with the “best ideas, innovations and experiences.”

Changes aren’t so bad

The committee of MPs recently discussed the National Lottery and suggested that Camelot’s license was too long. Therefore it is difficult to make changes. However, ticket sales have been in decline and the inflexibility of the license has caused issues. Camelot has recently try to counteract falling sales by introducing new rules for the UK National Lottery.

Popular with players and charities

Camelot profits rose from £39 million to £71 million in a seven year period up to 2017. In 2017, the lottery had total sales of £6.9 billion and around 14 million people a month played at least one of the lottery games. The National Lottery will also reach its 25th anniversary next year. Since its inception in 1994, over £39 billion has been raised for good causes. Camelotplan to use the anniversary celebrations to raise awareness of lottery funded projects.

A new era for the National Lottery

A spokesperson for the British Gambling Commission said that they hope to create healthy competition between businesses and investors. This will help them to find the right operator to take the National Lottery forward. They also want to ensure that it continues to be known as one of the biggest and best lotteries in the world.Since 1994, the National Lottery has paid out more than £69 billion in prize money, and crowned over 5,000 individual millionaires.
