Ticket Bought on Holiday Wins $70m Lotto Max Jackpot

Dale McEwen from Regina in Saskatchewan made history in the April 1 Lotto Max draw. He won the $70million jackpot and that’s the highest ever win in the Western Canada lottery region.

His winning Lotto Max ticket was purchased from a Co-Op gas station in Dunmore, Alberta on their way to a skiing holiday. He received his cheque at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina on Tuesday April 19.

You can’t even sleep

Many of us spend our time dreaming about winning a big lottery prize. Dale is no exception to the rule but said it’s a very different feeling when the win actually comes along. “You think you know what it would feel like, but when it’s in your hands, your mind will not stop and you can’t even sleep,” said the Lotto Max winner.

It wasn’t until the night after the draw that the jackpot win was discovered. He was getting ready to go out on a family dinner when deciding to check the Lotto Spot! app to see if he’d won anything. That’s when he found out he was a multi-millionaire.

He quickly told his partner the great news, but both weren’t sure they’d really won. His wife Christie didn’t think he was joking though and checked the app on her phone. They had won and just sat there for a while dumbfounded at what had just happened. Dale jokes the win ruined his skiing trip.

Time to upgrade

Plans for the Lotto Max win including helping family members and going travelling. Mr McEwen added that “we’re going to upgrade a few things.”  He says becoming a multi-millionaire is stressful. However, he quickly added that it’s “not a bad stress.”

The Lotto Max winner says that he and his wife both work hard. They enjoy it too and this windfall is “more of a relief for the future.” Christie joked that there are now “a lot more zeroes in our bank account than normal.”

His Lotto Max ticket successfully matched 07-10-18-29-38-43 and 50 to win the jackpot. The previous highest jackpot won in Saskatchewan was $60million won six years ago.
