The Generosity of a $896,000 TattsLotto Winner
Peter Charleton from Yarra Ranges in Victoria, Australia won an $896,511.14 TattsLotto prize last August. It was a win that has proved to be very beneficial for others as he’s given nearly all of his winnings away.
His TattsLotto win was a rather sentimental one. He had been caring for his Uncle Charlie, who sadly passed away just weeks before his big win. They played the lottery together and his uncle always said a big win would come along one day.
What’s on the roof?
Then something strange happened. Peter left his uncle’s pocketknife on the roof of his car. He drove for an hour, and it was still there. He then went online to tell everyone his luck was in, and he’d buy some TattsLotto tickets. One of them won $896,511.14. No wonder Peter said: “Maybe, just maybe, Uncle Charlie pulled some strings on his way out,” he wondered.
The 47-year-old had a 17-day wait to receive his TattsLotto winnings. Only his immediate family knew about his win. Peter didn’t “feel comfortable” about keeping all of his winnings so decided to give nearly all of it away.
Do with it as you please
He paid off his bills and purchased a second-hand car. Then it was time to start helping others but in an unorthodox manner. He’d go to local restaurants and just offer to pay for people’s food. Other times he’d give people between $500 and $1,000 and just say: “Do with it as you please.”
The TattsLotto winner also went onto Facebook and gave away money. He’d just message people asking for their bank details so he could send them money. He admits that some thought he was a scammer but that wasn’t the fact.
Before widely publicising his TattsLotto win, he ensured most of the windfall had already been spent. “My mission was to get rid of it all before people realized I'd won it," said the 47-year-old.
It was just the latest generous donations he’d made. In the past, the TattsLotto winner had given inflatable bouncy castles to children’s parties free of charge.
