Small EuroMillions Win Turns Out to be €500,000

When a man from Galway in Ireland received an email from the lottery he thought it was just a couple of euro he’d won. It turned out to be a €500,000 EuroMillions Plus prize in the draw held on August 23.

It was the morning after the EuroMillions draw and he was going through his usual routine. This was to be no normal morning for this lottery player from Galway.

An email from the National Lottery had been received informing him of a win. His expectations weren’t high though.

Something small

“I just thought it’d be something small like €2 or €2.50,” he recalled. Many players feel like that but he was minutes away from discovering that his win was actually a fantastic  €500,000.

Even when going to National Lottery HQ in Dublin to claim his prize, there was still a degree of disbelief. The EuroMillions winner joked: “Even though I have my cheque in hand now and I’ve counted all the zeroes, I’m not sure I quite believe it.

In his eyes, playing the lottery was just a way of helping charities and good causes. That’s certainly true of course with lotteries raising millions for deserving causes.

Many athletes who took part in the recent Paris Summer Olympics would have struggled to do so  if they hadn’t received National Lottery funding.

Never in a million years

Speaking about his win, the EuroMillions player said: “Never in a million years did I think that I would actually win big.”

He could win even more in September as there are some massive jackpots to be won.  Tuesday’s EuroMillions jackpot is £110 million and there’s a Superdraw with the same top prize due to be held on September 27.

If he was to enter that draw and win the top prize, he’d be the owner of only the 20th ticket bought in Ireland to win the EuroMillions jackpot. The last Irish ticket to win the top prize was sold in 2022 when a €25.9 million jackpot was won.
