Simple Life for $1.3 billion Powerball Winner

12 months ago, Cheng ‘Charlie’ Saephan was named as the player who bought a $1.3 billion winning Powerball ticket. A year on from that success, he’s been talking about how his life has changed.

“I don’t worry about money now. I’ve got my family set up,” said the Powerball winner. The Oregon resident shared his April 6, 2024  Powerball jackpot with his wife Duanpen and a female friend, Laiza Chao. The win was accepted as a one-off lump sum payment of $621 million before taxes.

Cancer battle continues

His amazing Powerball win came at a time when he was battling cancer and that remains the case twelve months on. He has had two more surgeries in the past year.

Most of the last year has been spent in Portland, where he’s lived for over 30 years.. There was a trip to Las Vegas though with some male friends.  

He has bought a new family home and also a very special car. A metallic neon Lamborghini has been purchased. It’s a rare vehicle and he had to buy the sports car from a Canadian dealer.  $2.05 billion Powerball winner Edwin Castro has bought several classic cars   with his windfall.

Oregon is a lucky state in which to play the Powerball draw.  This January saw Abbas Shafii win a $328.5 million jackpot.

The 2024 win has also been good news for his local community. He has invested in a local Thai restaurant group and purchased some east-side apartments hoping they will be a good investment.

His Powerball win and going public has also led to strangers approaching him when he goes to a Portland Blazers basketball match. She asked him how he was doing and then had to explain how she’d seen him on the news.

Simple life

Even though he’s now a multi-millionaire, he makes sure he’s at home when his children get back from school. He prefers to live a simple life and even still buy Powerball tickets. Perhaps he might win tonight’s draw which has a $100 million top prize.
