Sanitation Workers Clean Up with 100m Rupees Kerala Lottery Win
A group of 11 female sanitation workers cleaned up with a 100m rupees (£946,685) Kerala lottery win.
The syndicate all work in the state of Kerala which is in the south of India. Their job sees them collecting non-biodegradable waste from households. Sometimes they can earn as little as 250 rupees a day. That’s around £2.39 so a big lottery win like this means everything to them.
Financial problems solved
So poorly are they paid, many of them have had to take out loans to survive financially. Now and then, they’d pool together to buy a Kerala lottery ticket and dream of success. Those dreams have now become reality.
Their tickets are usually bought by MP Rahda. The delighted player said their previous biggest win was just 1,000 rupees. This time they bought a 250 rupee ticket as it was a special monsoon bumper draw.
Affording that amount was a bit of a struggle. Each player was due to pay 25 rupees towards the ticket. One of the winners, 72-year-old Ms Kuttimalu had to borrow 12.5 rupees from fellow syndicate member Cherumannil Baby.
Both players paid that amount and agreed to share any winnings. Ms Kuttimalu said: “We didn’t expect to win such a huge amount of money.”
After taxes have been paid, they will share 63 million rupees. Nine will receive 6.3 million rupees with the remaining amount shared by Kuttimalu and Baby. Despite their Kerala Lottery win, the syndicate plan on continuing to work.
Fourth time lucky
It was the day after the Kerala Lottery draw that they discovered their fantastic win. They’d previously played the bumper lottery three times. “We are fourth time lucky!” said the Kerala Lottery winner.
Ms Baby, 62, plans to build a new house and clear her debts. Five years ago her house was washed away in the floods that hit the area.
Leela needed cash for her daughter. Money had already been borrowed to pay for her wedding and more is needed for an operation. Now those problems are over.
