£3 Loose Change Wins £300,000 Scratchcard Prize
Winning a big scratchcard prize really can change your life. Sean Irwin from Brentwood in Essex, England won £300,000 and the plumber now wants to retrain as a videographer. None of this would have happened but for some loose change.
The 36-year-old bought the National Lottery scratchcard on a whim. He’d gone to a shop to buy some water for himself and his workmates. However, he also had £3 in loose change remaining, so decided to purchase a National Lottery Ruby Doubler scratchcard.
Triple check
Sean couldn’t believe his luck when it won him £300,000. He began to see if it had won anything. “I had only played half of it when I saw that I had matched two number 22s and revealed the prize symbol for £300,000. I thought I was seeing things, and checked, then triple-checked, I even read the rules on the back of the scratchcard," said the surprised player.
He took the scratchcard to his manager and then called Camelot to confirm the win. It’s not been an easy time for Sean as he lost his father to cancer earlier in 2021. Now he has had this windfall, he says his tough times have taught him to “make the most of every opportunity.”
Mr Irwin says that his scratchcard win “has opened up so many doors.” That includes his decision to quit plumbing and “explore a new career.”
Emotional spending plans
Before that though he wants to pay off his father’s funeral costs. He’ll also buy a “really lovely headstone” which means his mother “doesn’t have that worry looming over her.” He wants to help her as he says his mother has been “my biggest supporter.” Being able to help her now is “the best feeling” he can have.
Other plans for his scratchcard win include buying a flat and then going travelling. The whole thought of winning £300,000 is an “amazing feeling.” He is determined to be careful with his winnings. It will give him long-term security” and “all thanks to £3 loose change.”
