Just because someone wins £1 million playing EuroMillions, it doesn’t mean they forget what is value for money. That’s been the case with Ruth Giblin from Telford, England, especially when it comes to gondola trips.

It was early in the morning last year when her EuroMillions win was discovered. The couple were going to go for a swim when Ruth looked at the National Lottery app and saw an email telling her she’d won £1 million.

Stunned

A phone call to Camelot confirmed her amazing win. “We were just stunned and started crying,” she recalled. Then they woke up their children to tell them the incredible news. Her parents were next to be told and it made her dad’s day even better as it was also his birthday.

When the 45-year-old won her EuroMillions prize last August, she was suddenly able to afford things she couldn’t in the past. That began with her paying for an eye test and new glasses.

The mortgage on the house she shares with her husband, Rob, 49, has also been paid. It also has a new kitchen but the EuroMillions winner says she still needs to pinch herself sometimes to prove it’s not all a dream.

Other purchases have included their first dog, a miniature schnauzer that they’ve called Rohan. Family means everything to the couple and they’ve paid for an extension onto her parent’s house.

Rip-off

The EuroMillions winner used part of her winnings to go to Venice. That was the first time her children had travelled on a plane.  Tourists love to go on gondola trips and Ruth was no exception. However, despite her wealth, her opinion was that €80 was a “rip off” and turned the offer down.

Ruth hasn’t quit her job as a leisure centre supervisor and wants to become a teaching assistant. The EuroMillions winner still remembers the days when not everything was affordable. That explains the gondola incident in Venice.

The EuroMillions jackpot hasn’t been won since August 1. Tonight’s draw has a £79 million (€92 million) jackpot.
