£1,760 Winning Lotto Ticket Thrown in the Kitchen Bin

Keeping a winning lottery ticket is so important. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for the Hayes family from Kilmarnock in Scotland. They recently lost out on a £1,750 Lotto win after it was accidentally thrown in a rubbish bin.

Jumping up and down

Their big win came in the Lotto draw held on April 9. The Ayrshire couple’s ticket was checked the day after the draw had taken place. It had managed to match five of the six main numbers.

Laura admits that it was a shock to discover their big win. “We were just staring at the screen.” The lucky Lotto winner added: “We were jumping up and down.”

There are plenty of ways in which you can  keep a winning lottery ticket safe  before claiming your winnings but sometimes things go wrong.

Tidying time

Laura and her partner Mark  left their winning Lotto ticket on their kitchen counter. Time came for a bit of a tidy-up and during it, their seven-year-old daughter Isla threw the winning ticket into the bin. The ticket was nowhere to be found and they reckoned it must have been thrown out by mistake.

Their good luck had really run out because it just happened to be bin day. By the time they realised their winning ticket was missing the bins had been taken away. An American took  three months to find his $50,000 winning Powerball ticket.

Mark said that his daughter had “meant well” when helping to tidy up and “was so pleased with herself.”  That can’t bring their ticket back though.

Unable to find their ticket, they contacted the lottery operator and explained what had happened. They hoped that the win could still be claimed but their hopes were to be dashed.

The lottery operator told them that as they no longer had the physical ticket or a photo proving they owned it, the win could not be paid out.

Speaking about the disappointment, Laura commented: “It’s such a gut-punch. It would have helped massively with bills and day-to-day stuff. But we’ve learned the hard way.”
