£1 million EuroMillions Winners Building Their Own Home
Tonight sees the €200 million (approx. £174 million) EuroMillions Superdraw take place. How would a big win change your life? £1 million winners John and Patricia Gill from Warrington in Cheshire have been talking about life since becoming lottery millionaires.
Christmas Day is so special to many of us but it’s even more memorable for this couple. It was on that day eight years ago that they won their £1 million EuroMillions prize.
Since their success, the couple have decided to quit their jobs. Patricia worked as an accountant, while her husband owned a truck repair company which he’s now sold.
More time
As Patricia, 60, explains, their EuroMillions win means it has “bought us time - the time to do so much with our lives.”
Some EuroMillions winners go out and buy their dream home. However, John, 64, (who has worked as an engineer) is busy building theirs.
A detached bungalow is being worked on and the plan is it’ll be ready to move into next spring. He loves doing the work even though he’s now retired. “It gives him something to get his teeth into,” said Patricia.
That includes the plumbing, central heating, taking down the chimney breasts and putting the windows in. He did get someone in to fit the boiler as they can be rather temperamental.
John says doing the building work himself has “helped keep the costs down.” He added: “It would cost a fortune if you didn’t do it yourself.”
How much?
Looking back at the day they became millionaires, John explained how initially he wasn’t sure how much they’d won. “I just couldn’t work out if I had won £100, £1,000, or £100,000 – and then I realised it was £1,000,000.”
The couple have also used their EuroMillions win to go on holidays, get their children on the property ladder and help their favourite charities.
Even though they have already won £1 million, the couple have already purchased a ticket for tonight’s EuroMillions Superdraw. Patricia hopes “someone in the UK will be as lucky as I have been,”
