She accepted her winnings as a one-off payment of $278m after taxes. The Powerball winner was 84 years-old at the time and decided to share her win with her son Scott Mackenzie if he promised to look after her for the rest of her life. That included helping her with dealing with the massive windfall.
Just Who Won the Jackpot?
Her win was a memorable one especially in Zephyrhills where she lived. People wondered who the winner was during the two weeks it took Ms. MacKenzie to claim her winnings. The winner turned out to be a reclusive woman who rarely left her home. She refused to answer journalists’ questions, but we did discover one amazing fact. A woman had possibly missed out on the jackpot after letting Gloria go ahead of her in the Powerball ticket line.
Accusation of Poor Investments
Now six years later, the Powerball winner has filed a case against her son for mismanaging the fortune. It alleges that her son hired a financial advisor with no experience in managing huge sums of money. It’s claimed conservative investments with low returns and a charge of $2m in fees were made.Greg Anderson, Gloria MacKenzie's attorney, has stressed that it is always a good idea to check the quality of your financial advisors.
No Justification Claims Son
Scott Mackenzie has described the allegations as baseless. He believes there is no justification behind the lawsuit. Court documents revealed that the decision to invest money had been taken according to the will of his mother.“Although he strongly disagrees with the allegations that have been made, he will respect his family’s privacy by reserving any further comments until the case has been concluded,” said Lee Wedekind III, Scott Mackenzie’s attorney.
