Oregon Player Claims $328.5 million Powerball Jackpot

Abbas Shafii from Beaverton in Oregon, USA has been revealed as the winner of the $328.5 million Powerball jackpot won in the January 17 draw.

The 79-year-old bought his winning Powerball ticket from a Fred Meyer store in Beaverton the day before the draw. He had a choice over how to receive his fantastic winnings.

Mr Shafii opted to accept his jackpot as a one-off payment rather than an annuity. That means he has received $146.4 million. After the payment of state and federal taxes, he will be left with $77.78 million.

Overjoyed

Speaking about his Powerball success, the lucky player said that he was “overjoyed” to have won the jackpot. He then revealed just how he plans on using his winnings.

Some of the jackpot win will be invested and he added that he wants to “share my good fortune with non-profit organizations that are close to my heart.”  There will be some treats for himself though with plenty of travelling on the way.

Also being rather generous is the store that sold the winning ticket. The Fred Meyer store has received a $100,000 bonus. Half of that amount will be donated to the Oregon Food Bank. That forms part of the Fred Meyer Zero Hunger | Zero Waste mission.

Their stores seem to be lucky places to buy lottery tickets. November 2022 saw one sell a Megabucks ticket that won $7.9 million. 12 months later, a Powerball ticket that won $1 million was also bought in a Fred Meyer store in Oregon.

Last year saw a $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot won in the state  and shared by three delighted players.

There hasn’t been a jackpot winner since that January 17 success. Last January saw  a ticket sold in Michigan win a $842.4 million Powerball jackpot.

Tonight’s Powerball draw has a top prize of $230 million. If it is won, there is the option of receiving the jackpot as a cash option of $103.2 million.
