No more Work for £2m Scratchcard Winner

Ian Black from Carlisle in Cumbria, England worked for the same company for 42 years. Now he’s quit his job just hours after winning a £2 million scratchcard prize on January 13.

As is sometimes the case, it was a win that nearly didn’t happen. The 61-year-old was returning home from his nightshift at Pirelli Tyres. He headed to a local garage to buy a paper and a scratchcard.

The most important decision ever

Then he saw that there was roadworks outside the garage. He thought of going somewhere else but decided to stick to his usual routine. Never did he think that would be the most important decision of his life.

After purchasing the scratchcard, he discovered it had won him £2 million. “I just could not believe what I was seeing. I let out a scream and immediately drove home.” Hiswife Sandra didn’t believe it either.

The 55-year-old had to look twice at the scratchcard and then nearly fainted. “Sandra just went white,” said Ian. Still not totally believing what was happening, Sandra asked her husband to phone Camelot for confirmation.

Her fears that there was something wrong with the scratchcard soon disappeared. When Ian was told it had indeed won £2 million, it was his turn to go white. Then he had another important decision to make.

An unforgettable moment

Ian was soon on the phone to his boss to quit his job as a production operator. He was asked why he was giving up his job after 42 years. “That feeling when I could just say 'I have won the National Lottery' is a moment I will never forget,” said the jubilant and now retired scratchcard winner.

Ian and Sarah have five children and 10 grandchildren. Some of their scratchcard winnings will be used to help them get on the property ladder. The couple will also move to a “dream home.”

Also being helped is their beloved rescue dog, Meg. The Labrador-Staffie cross needs an operation on her legs and this win will pay for that.
