No Irish Lotto Jackpot Win Since June

The November 24 Irish Lotto draw ended in a rollover. That’s not the biggest news story of the year you might think. However, this is a lottery that hasn’t seen its jackpot won since June 5 and reached its €19 million jackpot cap in October.

Wednesday’s draw did still produce a big winner. One ticket matched five of the main balls and the bonus ball to win €781,265. With the Irish Lotto jackpot capped, the amount that is usually added to the jackpot goes down to the next level. 

The mystery remains though, why is the jackpot not being won? The draw has 47 balls, that’s compared to 59 in the UK Lotto game. A spokesperson for the National Lottery said that this run without a win is unprecedented. Since 2015, 80% of Irish Lotto jackpots have been won in the space of seven weeks.

Reduce the number of balls

Bernard Dukan is the Fine Gael TD for Kildare North in Ireland. He’s called for a full investigation and audit into the Irish Lotto draw. The politician is calling for the number of balls in the draw to be reduced to give players a better chance of winning the jackpot.

The Irish Lotto is run by Premier Lotteries Ireland. Mr Dukan believes reducing the number of balls would “be a mark of good faith” and “make the draw more winnable.” An audit would also boost public confidence in the draw. He also believes there should be the return of an independent observer for the draws.

The politician does not believe any irregularities are taking place. He added that the chances of winning the jackpot are so remote “punters must be thinking Shergar would have a better chance at winning Squid Game.”

Odds on winning

According to Eamonn Toland from TheMathsTutor.ie, taking two balls out of the draw would increase the chances of winning by 20%.The odds of winning the Irish Lotto are 1 in 10.7 million. That’s compared to 1 in 45,057,474 for the UK Lotto which regularly sees jackpot winners.Will the Irish Lotto draw on Saturday be the one that finally produces a jackpot win?
