New Style Mega Millions Draw Proves to be Great Success

As usual it’s a busy time for lottery players in the USA. Tuesday saw  the first new-look Mega Millions draw.  Meanwhile a Powerball syndicate from Kentucky are celebrating a $50,000 win.

More profitable

First to the Mega Millions lottery. While Tuesday’s draw did not produce a jackpot winner, it was a more profitable one for players. The success of the draw delighted members of the Mega Millions Consortium.

They calculated the total amount won was over $3.4 million more than would have been so under the previous structure. Rather than winning $840,628, the amount won was $4.32 million.

"We couldn't be more thrilled for our players and for how the new game is being received,” said Joshua Johnson, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium. Tonight’s draw has a $72 million jackpot.

Syndicate success

In the Powerball lottery, 17 distillery workers from Kentucky won $50,000 in the March 22 draw. Their syndicate leader Chris Smith said that they have been trying for over a year to get a big win.

Speaking about their win, he commented that their wins are usually only four or eight dollars with a top win of $100. Now they have smashed that record which Mr Smith described as: “a pretty good little payout for everybody.” Each of the syndicate members will receive $2,941 after taxes have been paid.

He recalled the moment that their Powerball win was discovered. Their ticket was scanned soon after the draw and when he saw it had won $50,000, he said it felt “kind of scary.” He took the ticket home to scan it on his phone to confirm it had won.

Amazingly, that week had seen him decide to make their Powerball purchase at a different store. A week after their win,  a Californian ticket won a $526.5 million Powerball jackpot.

Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Mary Harville commented that the syndicate were “laughing and joking with one another while we were printing their cheques.” Tomorrow’s Powerball draw has an $82 million top prize.
