Avoid this new Powerball scam that promises you money
A new Powerball scam is making the rounds online. It tries to take advantage of the recent win by North Carolina resident Charles W. Jackson Jr.
The North Carolina (N.C.) Education Lottery issued a new warning this week. The Powerball scam has been sending out emails and using social media posts with offers of money.
The scammers are posing as Charles W. Jackson Jr. and offering to donate money to your favourite charity. To do so they ask for a $500 deposit.
There have also been several social media posts. One post read “I’m giving away $100,000 to my first 2k followers $$.”
Always report lottery scams
Mark Michalko, executive director of N.C. Education Lottery, stated, “Anyone who makes a promise of a donation or prize but wants you to give money first is trying to trick you.”
The Lottery officials have recorded 35 cases of the scam so far. If you come across one of these scams then they recommend you contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section at 1-877-5-NOSCAM or file a consumer complaint online.
Not the first lottery scam
Apart from this Powerball scam, there have been many other instances of attempted extortion. These scams often take the form of emails and claim that you have won an international lottery.
Before you can receive the winnings though, they ask for a small deposit to secure the funds. Of course, once you send the money you never receive the advertised amount.
To make sure you don’t fall for one of these scams make sure to play with a trusted website. Lottery24 is one of those trusted websites. We will never ask for a deposit to secure your win.
