National Lottery Winners Go Litter Picking on Sandsend Beach

 When a big National Lottery win comes along, a trip to the beach is often planned. For a team of 24 players who had won £25 million, they spent the day picking up litter at Sandsend Beach in Whitby in Yorkshire, England.

Protecting marine animals

 Litter continues to be a big problem on beaches. The National Lottery winners were looking to tidy up any pieces of tiny plastic waste. That’s not just litter but a danger for marine animals. A huge amount of rubbish is floating in our seas and this gets bought ashore by the tide.

The cleaning-up exercise was guided by the 2 Minute Foundation. The charity has a lot to thank the National Lottery for. They have received £19,410 in funding which was used to boost its education programme.

One of the charity workers is Claire Giner. She said that the litter pick “shows what can be achieved in a short space of time.”

Two of the National Lottery winners helping out were Terry Kennedy and Kay Yoxall from Barnsley in South Yorkshire. They won £1 million playing the Lotto draw last year. Kay said that since their win they have visited some “incredible beaches.”

Giving something back

However, there’s no place like home and the UK has some beautiful beaches too. The National Lottery winner said they need protecting and it was “fantastic” to “give something back on a local level.”

Other National Lottery winners helping out included Amanda and Graham Nield from Wakefield in West Yorkshire. The couple won £6.6 million nine years ago. Also picking up litter were Lesley and Malcolm White from Denholme in West Yorkshire.

Four years ago they won £1 million playing the EuroMillions draw. Perhaps they’ll be playing tonight’s draw hoping to become the highest ever EuroMillions winners.

The EuroMillions top prize has reached the jackpot cap. That means a massive £194 million top prize this evening. With tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot at $440 million and 236.3 million euros to be won in the SuperEnalotto draw, it could be a massive night.
