National Lottery Helps British Athletes Achieve Olympic Glory

The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway with athletes dreaming of success. For many British competitors, their chances have been improved thanks to help from the National Lottery.

A Channel 4 documentary has highlighted the valuable assistance the National Lottery gives. This includes those competing at the Olympics and Paralympics..

Josh Kerr is one of the leading British athletes. He’s one of the favorites to win the men’s 1500m gold medal, having won the world title last year.

“I think I will”

He’s confident of becoming an Olympic champion and has said: “My job is to go out and win a gold medal and I think I will.”

‘The Path to Paris.’ documentary shows just how costly it can be to achieve your dreams of Olympic success.

The National Lottery has been funding athletes since it was created.  This includes helping with their living and travel expenses. The funding also helps them access the best  training facilities, psychologists, nutritionists, coaches and physiotherapists.

Those can be very costly so the funding takes that worry away. That allows them to concentrate fully on achieving the success they dream of.

Speaking about the funding, Kerr said that it means “the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team is ensured to be the best-prepared team in the world.”

Also dreaming of Olympic success is Keely Hodgkinson. At the last Olympics in Tokyo, Keely won the silver medal in the 800m at the age of just 19. Now in 2024, her dream is to go one better and win gold in Paris.

That could well happen but it’s been such hard work to put herself in that position. It would have been so much more difficult if there hadn’t been the National Lottery funding to help her.

Transformed

Speaking about the documentary, the athlete said “National Lottery players have transformed Athletics and Para-Athletics in the UK, but you don’t often see how that investment powers us to win.”

Just how the National Lottery helps athletes is summed up by her saying: “None of this would be possible without that investment.”
