National Lottery funding to help clean up Manchester’s Edwardian baths
Withington Baths and Leisure Centre in Manchester has received a grant from the National Lottery funding to restore the Edwardian building’s roof.

The National Lottery’s Heritage Lottery Fund
has granted £81,700 to the Edwardian structure. This will be used to fully refurbish the building’s crumbling roof. They also plan to raise awareness of the heritage of the last working Edwardian baths in Manchester. The swimming pool was built in 1911 and is currently used by around 2,000 members.
Swimming in cash
Previously run by Manchester City Council, the Edwardian baths were handed over to a community group in 2013. The Heritage Lottery grant will be used to provide educational activities.The Director of Withington Baths and Leisure Centre told lottery officials that support from the National Lottery is a huge step forward. “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to lottery players. It’s a massive step that moves up closer to restoring the Baths and making it the best place to swim and workout in Manchester.”
Lottery funding for the community
The official continued to say that in 2013 the building was saved from closure by members of the local Withington community. Since then, the team of staff members and community leaders have been committed to making the Baths a sustainable leisure facility open for everyone. “This investment puts us on the journey to restore the building as well as educating our members and visitors about the fascinating history of the Baths.”Recently the National Lottery’s charitable fund
also promised a grant to help preserve thousands of tributes to the victims of the Manchester Arena terrorist attack.
