National Lottery Community Fund boost Scottish projects for the elderly

The Men with their Shed[/caption]The shed gives retired and lonely older people a place to call home. It will receive £49,150 from the National Lottery Community Fund. The cash will help to boost membership from 50 to 80 people.Activities at the men’s shed include learning and sharing new skills. At the same time, people build new friendships with other locals. A spokesperson for the Barrhead Men’s Shed said they can now reach further into the community.“This award gives us greater sustainability,” they said. “It will encourage more isolated men to come along to our shed.”
Lifelong commitment
Another project to benefit is Lightburn Elderly Association Project (LEAP). Their £47,140 will fund a programme of lifelong learning classes. LEAP provides activities for isolated people over 50 in South Lanarkshire. Their plan is to help 1,200 people over the next three years.The National Lottery Community Fund recently rebranded from the Big Lottery Fund. The fund’s Scottish chair, Maureen McGinn, said the focus has always been the same. “Funding projects which matter to people and communities.”Last year over £48 million of funding went to community projects across Scotland. Over 1130 projects and communities benefited.
