Lottery Winners Knit Christmas Angels for Hospice
You might imagine that lottery winners might be relaxing at this time of year. However, more than 50 winners have been helping others by knitting Christmas angels. They’ve also been delivering presents to patients at a hospice for babies and toddlers.
Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Middlesbrough is going to have a Christmas they will never forget. The group of lottery winners have been following all the necessary quarantine procedures in recent weeks. This means the woolly toys will be completely safe to put a big smile on the faces of those receiving them. That will include not just children but also their families and carers.
All head to the Gingerbread Grotto
There’s going to be a special venue for the presentation of the gifts. A Christmas grotto gingerbread playhouse was built three years ago by another team of lottery winners.
One of the lottery winning couples who have been busy knitting are Cheryl and Mark Brudenell. The couple come from Stockton-on-Tees and won a won a £1 million UK Lotto prize 13 years ago. Cheryl explained why she and her husband took part in the festive project.
“We just wanted to do our bit to help and support. Knowing I was doing something for such a great cause and one which is so close to both of our hearts at the same time. The angels really do bring smiles to faces and this is just wonderful to see.”
A Special Time
Also helping out was £2.7 million UK Lotto winner Elaine Thompson from Newcastle. It was five years ago that she had her big lottery win. It’s changed her life but helping others is also important to her. “Charity is something which is close to all of our hearts. I, like many of the other National Lottery winners, really like to do something special for others at Christmas time.”
Rebecca Jobson is the head of fundraising at the hospice that has received over £200,000 in National Lottery funding. She’s understandably delighted at the donation from the lottery winners. “We cannot thank the National Lottery winners enough. To think that a small group knitted so many angels during November is amazing. Every single angel delivered will make a difference.”
