Just who has won $33.5m?
Lottery officials are still waiting to find out who won a $33.5 million NZ Lotto Powerball prize on June 28.
The winning ticket was purchased from FreshChoice Merivale in Christchurch. It’s great news for whoever bought the ticket but also for the store.
It's owned by Craig Grant and he admits that the success was a “little bit of sweet and sour” for his staff. Easter Monday saw a masked and allegedly armed man robbed the Lotto till. One of the female workers on the till still works for the store. They were working the day the $33.5 million winning ticket was sold.
Speaking about the mystery lottery winner, Mr Grant said: “We're hoping it’s local and someone (who) needs it.”
Hopefully the winner will soon claim their prize. This week has seen a $70 million Lotto Max jackpot go unclaimed.
A new home
Tammy and Steve Gordy from Ottumwa in Iowa, USA, have won a $2 million Powerball prize in the June 24 draw. The win comes 22 years after the couple lost their home in a tornado.
They are currently building a new home but costs have delayed finishing work. This lottery win will change all of that. A better property can be built now and that includes a Jacuzzi and a walk-in closet.
“I fell to my chair,” said Tammy when discovering $2 million had been won. “I couldn’t see! There were all those zeroes,” added the lottery winner.
Is this real?
Also moving into a new property will be $500,000 Lotto Max winner Michael Beauchamp. His win came in the June 20 draw while driving home. He’d stopped the car to check his lottery ticket.
“I was shocked and had to ask myself, ‘Is this real?” recalled the surprised lottery winner. He then phoned his partner Patti with the good news. In addition to a new home being bought, Michael is also looking forward to retiring earlier.
