A lottery gift from a father to his daughter resulted in a $2 million prize, which at first she thought was a joke from her parents.
An occasional lottery player
A
woman from Trenton in New Jersey, USA, has won a huge $2 million on a scratch off lottery ticket, which was given to her as a gift. Melissa Spagnola only ever plays the lottery when her parents buy her tickets. They often buy lottery gifts for the family with no occasion required. This time her father bought the tickets. Melissa received a 100X The Bucks scratch off ticket. She’d never played it before and wasn’t sure what it meant after scratching it. “Is it real?” the scratch off winner asked her parents. The ticket was showing a value worth $2 million. It was real, and Melissa then had to decide how to take the winnings. She could choose 25 annual payments of $80,000 or a lump sum worth $1.45 million.
A win for the whole family
The New Jersey winner took her prize as a lump sum. The winnings from her lottery gift will be shared with her family. Melissa also plans to take them all on holiday to the Bahamas. As for the rest of the winnings, the lucky winner planned to put it towards making sure she is financially stable. It wasn’t clear if the family planned to continue buying lottery gifts for each other. The prize was claimed in April 2018, but New Jersey lottery officials waited until recently to announce the lucky win.
