Lottery Companies and Winners Helping Ukraine
As the war in Ukraine continues, lottery companies and winners have been doing their best to help those affected by the conflict.
Offering a home
Sue Herdman won a £1.2mLotto jackpot 12 years ago and is helping a family from Ukraine move to England. Tatyana, Alfred, and their four-year-old son Elean left Ukraine after their home was bombed. They ended up in a German refugee camp but are now on their way to North Yorkshire in England.
The family will move into spare rooms at the pig farm in Boroughbridge that is owned by Sue and her partner Andrew Hornshaw.“I just wanted to help. It was seeing those heart-breaking images on the news,” explained the lottery winner. She added: “The very best thing you can ever buy with money is time, because you have time to help other people,”
The family have been told that the area they are moving too is quite remote. The mother didn’t mind that at all saying she didn’t care “as long as I’m safe and as long as there’s no bombs overhead.”
Sue used to own a hairdressing salon before her lottery win. Tatyana was close to qualifying as a hairdresser before the war began. Perhaps that can be resumed when moving to England.
Massive donations
Countries around the world are doing their best to help Ukraine. In Massachusetts, USA, Barbara Riley won a $710,000 Mega Millions lottery prize on March 15. The lucky player says she will donate her winnings to help people in Ukraine.
In Belgium, the National Lottery has donated €1.9 million to Belgian organisations giving emergency aid to refugees from Ukraine. This includes food, help with hygiene, psychosocial support, and education. Over 10,000 Ukrainian refugees have fled to Brussels since the war began.
Camelot run the National Lottery in the UK. They have donated £1m to a fund started by The Sun newspaper. Camelot CEO Nigel Railton said the company were “pleased to be able to support this hugely important campaign.” All the money raised goes to the Red Cross.
