Life Doesn’t Totally Change for Lottery Millionaires

Just because you become a lottery millionaire, it doesn’t necessarily mean your working days are over. As you’ll read, some big winners try their best to ensure that their life doesn’t totally change.

Carry on working

Take Elaine Thompson for example who continued to work stacking shelves even after winning £2.7 million in 1995. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that the lottery winner worked from 2am to 9am. No lie-ins for this lucky player who is now in her late sixties and asthmatic. 

Elaine even worked during the COVID lockdowns. Why carry on working? Well, the lottery millionaire wanted to be a “good role model” for her young children. “It’s important that children see you working hard,” she commented. Another factor was the fact she simply loves her job.

Staying Put

Trish Emerson  was lucky enough to win a £1.8 million lottery prize  20 years ago. Many winners immediately start looking for a new home to buy. Not Trish though as she decided to remain living in her council home. 

Not just that, the millionaire carried on working as a dinner lady. Just quitting her job would have left her “bored to tears.” The lottery winner carried on shopping at Primark and said she “can’t be posh anyway.” There are overseas holidays but she and her partner Graham stay in their caravan rather than a luxury hotel.

Second-hand Volvos

Steve and Lenka Thompson won a £105 million EuroMillions jackpot  in 2019 so you’d expected some extravagant spending. Yes they did move to a 14.5 acre estate. Builder Mr Thompson even renovated the house they bought. Not every purchase was expensive. A van and Volvo XC90 were purchased and both were second-hand. 

Joe and Jess Thwaite were even bigger winners. They won £184 million last year playing EuroMillions. The couple also bought a second-hand Volvo that cost just £38,000. 

It seems that some lottery winners are glad to have the security a massive windfall brings them. However, they don’t all just completely change the way they live, would you?
