Whoever the winner is can either take a cash sum of $318m or receive their jackpot win in the form of an annuity paid out over 30 years. They have 180 days to claim their winnings.

Legislation Allows Anonymity

There have only been ten larger jackpot wins in the state of Arizona, but this is the first ever Mega Millions top prize won in the state. However, legislation passed last year means the lucky winner can remain anonymous forever if they wish.The law was passed last August and allows total anonymity for those who win a lottery jackpot that is over $100,000. Several other states have passed similar legislation, including Texas, Maryland and Ohio.Arizona Lottery spokesman John Gilleland said that: “We may never be able to release the identity.” Since the legislation was passed in Arizona, any lottery winner who has had a windfall of at least $100,000 has decided to hide their identity. The chances therefore of this Mega Millions winner opting not to remain anonymous is likely to be high.
