El Gordo de Navidad Success for Valencia Flood Victims 

It’s not been the easiest of times for those living in the Valencia province of Spain. After floods affected the area, better news came when local players won €3 million in the El Gordo de Navidad draw on December 22.

While they missed out on the top two prizes, it was a different story when it came to the third tier. Players in Alzira, Catarroja, La Pobla de Vallbona and Requena each won €500,000.  There were also some fourth-tier prizes ranging from €20,000 in Xirivella to €200,000 in Alzira.

Ground-zero

When the floods hit, the La Estrella lottery shop in Paiporta was one that was called ‘ground-zero.’  Now it has a much happier claim to fame after success in the El Gordo de Navidad.

Mari Carmen Gomez, who helps run the lottery office said many tickets had been sold to volunteers and soldiers who had come to help those affected by the floods. The feeling that when there is misfortune, there must also be some joy has come true for locals.

The soldiers ended up helping in other ways. Customers asked what numbers they wanted for the El Gordo de Navidad draw and requested the same.

Unusual Christmas tree

It was a rough Christmas for locals because of the floods. Even the lottery office suffered damage and its Christmas tree was made out of four brooms, brushes and wellies.

In total, €36 million was won in the El Gordo de Navidad draw by players in the Valencian community.

The largest win came in the Valencia province municipality of Chella. Just over €7 million was distributed in that area. Winning tenths had been purchased from the Andrels Burger hamburger bar with many players going for the same number.

Other local winners had made their El Gordo de Navidad purchases in the Canal de Navarres areas at a sports centre and some Christians and Moors troupes.
