Fisherman Graham Wins £300,000 Scratchcard Prize

Graham Potts from Sandbach in Cheshire in the northwest of England is a keen fisherman. He’s in a good mood at present after hooking a £300,000 National Lottery scratchcard win. Not that Graham initially realised that was how much he’d won.

The 56-year-old had just finished his work as a traffic management engineer and popped into his local One Stop store on his way home. He had some spare change in his pocket and decided to try his luck on a Jewel Smash scratchcard.

Just £3?

The father-of-three didn’t check the scratchcard until returning home. When he did discover it was a winner, he thought his windfall was a meagre £3. Then he looked again, and everything changed. “I then started to see zeros but thought I was just seeing double or had maybe won £300!”

Still unsure how much his scratchcard had won, he called Camelot to “get this straight.” Then he was told that he’d won £300,000. “I just fell silent. I didn’t now whether to laugh, cry, shout or what to do,” he recalled.
He then decided to have a glass of beer to celebrate and then went to bed as he had to be up early for work the next day. Graham just wanted to keep things normal but admits that “everything still didn’t feel real.” By the evening, he was beginning to accept his win and set about working out he’d spend his scratchcard winnings.

Fishing equipment galore

New fishing equipment is unsurprisingly high on his shopping list and that includes buying a new van to put it all in. He also plans to buy treats for his family, including his two grown-up daughters and son. The scratchcard winner currently rents a one-bedroom flat. He doesn’t want to move but will look at buying the property.
“You just think the big wins always happen to other people – but not this time – this has happened to ordinary me – and could literally happen to anyone. It really is just totally amazing,” said the scratchcard winner.
