Finally a Relaxing Christmas Day Thanks to £1.2m Scratchcard Win

Christmas Day can be a great time but a busy one if you manage a pub. Craig Harrison and Debbie Piper from Lowestoft in Suffolk, England, know that all too well. This year though Christmas will be spent at home after winning £1.2m on a scratchcard.

Their win came on a ‘12 Pays of Christmas’ scratchcard and will be paid as £100,000 a month for a whole year. Craig, 60, and his partner Debbie, 58, have been together for 35 years. They have plenty of ideas how to spend their scratchcard winnings but first they want to have a relaxing Christmas Day.

The perfect Christmas lunch

The couple have been in the pub trade for nearly all their working lives. Mr Harrison said that means we’re used to helping the people of Lowestoft celebrate Christmas.” When it comes to their own festive family celebrations, they take place on another day.” Not this year though after this fantastic scratchcard win.

Craig admits that “it’ll be strange” not to spend Christmas Day working in the pub all day. 2022 will see the couple having a relaxed Christmas lunch with five others enjoying the feast.

Cooking oil and laundry

Their diary is affected throughout the year. For them Monday is their Sunday and a big roast is cooked for the whole family. It was that task that led to their scratchcard win. Mr Harrison was preparing to cook some tasty roast potatoes and realised he’d run out of cooking oil.

He was going to pop out to their local shop to buy some but then Debbie suggested he go to the Co-Op instead. Not because they have higher quality cooking oil but he could also take some washing to the laundrette. He bought a scratchcard at the Co-Op and the rest is history.

Craig joked that “I can’t help thinking, if it weren’t for cooking oil and that bag of dirty laundry, I wouldn’t have been in the right place at the right time and we wouldn’t now be banking £100,000 a month for a year."
