This is a lottery that is steeped in history and dates back to the 19th century. Initially, funds raised by the lottery were donated to the Children’s Hospital of the Child Jesus in Madrid. The current El Niño name was given in 1941.
The El Niño draw takes place just 15 days after the El Gordo de Navidad draw. It’s a special event that ties in with the celebration of the Epiphany aka Three Kings’ Day. That’s the day when the Three Kings visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. The translation of El Niño is ‘the child.’
