Children’s Help Leads to Massive Scratchcard Wins

Two families in Taiwan are celebrating big wins playing the ‘Super Red Envelope’ scratchcard. Both winners say they owe their success to their children.

One of the lucky scratchcard winners was a family from Hsinchu City in Taiwan who won nearly £500,000. The other successful players come from Taichung and won £25,000.

Each Lunar New Year’s Eve, the family from Hsinchu go to a shop that’s close to a local temple. This year was no exception and it proved to be a life-changing purchase. The parents had their two children with them and it turns out they are rather observant siblings.

First time lucky

They noticed that one of the scratchcards was out of place and suggested to their mother that she buy it. That’s just what her mother did and it was the first time she’d ever bought a scratchcard.  Last year  American Kyle Murray won a $70 million Lotto Max jackpot  with their first ever ticket.

Her inexperience showed when she believed the scratchcard was a loser.   That’s like the first time Powerball player  who had no idea he’d won $50,000.

However, the shopkeeper double-checked it and realised it hadn’t been scratched properly. It had in fact won one of the top prizes.

The family from Taichung say they regularly buy scratchcards during the Lunar New Year. It was the daughter who they have to thank for their fantastic win. The elementary school pupil chose the scratchcard that won them £25,000.

School uniform

Her choice of scratchcard was number 19 and that’s her school uniform number. Initially, they thought the win was only £2,500 but then the shopkeeper had a look and told them it was ten times more than that.

It’s a record-breaking time for the Taiwan Lottery. Their President, Hsieh Chih-hung says that the prize fund for the ‘Super Red Envelope’ scratchcard game is the largest in the history of the lottery.

There are still eight top prizes to be won. However,only around a tenth of the 1,200 that win £25,000 have been won.
