May will see two more balls added to the Oz Lotto draw and higher jackpots are anticipated in the future.

At present the odds of winning the Oz Lotto jackpot are 45.3 million to one. The addition of two more balls will see the odds of jackpot success change to one in 62.8 million.

Higher jackpots expected

There are currently 45 balls in the Oz Lotto draw. To win the top prize, players need to match the seven main balls that are drawn out. From May 11, there will be 47 numbers to choose from and jackpot totals may increase. There will also be three supplementary numbers drawn rather than the current two.

The decision has been taken by the Victoria government. They voted to amend the Public Lottery licence. This will mean the rules change in all the Australian states, not just in Victoria. The reason for that is the Oz Lotto is licensed in Victoria.

News of the changes to the Oz Lotto has produced some criticism. Steph Ryan is the state opposition gambling spokeswoman. She has claimed the key reason for the change is to produce more tax revenue for Victoria. With it being more difficult to win the jackpot, players will be keen to buy tickets and that will lead to increased sales.

Why the changes are being made

Just why have the Oz Lotto changes been made? Matt Hart is a spokesman for The Lott, who run the Oz Lotto. He said that the changes had been called for by players of the lottery. Mr Hart commented: “Players told us they wanted Oz Lotto to offer the potential for more winners and bigger prizes, and that’s exactly what we’ve given them.”

The Oz Lotto jackpot must be at least $2m in each draw. This will change next month with the new minimum figure being $3m. Extra prizes will be offered to players, and this means the chances other division wins will be one in 51. Currently, the odds of getting a win are 1 in 55.
