An Amazing Couple of Days for $2m Scratchcard Winner

Geraldine Gimblet from Lakeland in Florida, USA, has won a $2 million scratchcard prize. It’s a much-needed windfall after spending her life savings paying for treatment of her cancer-stricken daughter. As you’ll read it was an amazing couple of days for the Florida mother.

It’s a win that nearly didn’t happen  though. Her winning Bonus Crossword scratchcard was the last one on sale at a local convenience store. Initially, she was told there were no tickets left but he was asked to double check. 

One was found and to her delight it was one of her favourite Crossword games. The 74-year-old loves playing them and most likely is an even larger fan now.

The day beforehand had been a momentous one for her family. Her daughter had been released from hospital where she had been receiving treatment for breast cancer. As is the case when treatment ends she rang the bell but had no idea what lay ahead the following day.

So happy for her

Speaking about her mother’s $2 million scratchcard win, her daughter said: “My mom had taken out her life savings to take care of me when I was sick. I’m just so happy for her!”

When her scratchcard winnings were claimed, the Florida Lottery put up a photo of her cheque on Twitter. It’s proved incredibly popular with over 6,000 views and nearly 200 likes. One of the many replies on Twitter read: “Congratulations!!!! You were selfless in your giving and got more than you expected in return.”

Family affair

It was certainly a family affair when the delighted player went to claim her scratchcard winnings. Accompanying her were her daughter and granddaughter. As news spread about the amazing story behind her win, the Chief of Staff, Reggie Dixon arrived to join in the celebrations.

The lucky scratchcard winner has opted to receive her winnings as a one-off lump-sum payment. That means Geraldine received a total of $1.645 million.

Finding that one remaining scratchcard is also good news for the gas station. The Pipkin Road Beverage Castle will receive $2,000 for making the sale.
