$80m Australian Powerball Win Discovered at Christmas Party
A syndicate of 55 women from Perth in Western Australia discovered they’d won an $80 million Australian Powerball jackpot while having their Christmas party. One of the members had only just joined the syndicate at the last moment.

Lorna had been at the Curves gym a couple of days before the December 2 Australian Powerball draw. The gym owner suggested that they enter the draw, each member putting in $5. A quick search of her car led to the discovery of some coins left over from paying her parking ticket. Lorna rushed back to the gym and said, “oh, I just scraped that $5” and was told she was now part of the syndicate. The rest is history.
A Christmas get-together can be a joyous occasion. It’s even better if during it you find out you’ve won an $80 million Australian Powerball jackpot. They were at the Grapevine Italian Restaurant in Heathridge. 38 of the winners were present and it turned out to be a night of hugging and crying.
While waiting for their festive meal, they decided it was time to check their Australian Powerball ticket. Seconds later they were screaming that they had won the $80 million jackpot. Their winning entry was on line number 50 the very last one on their ticket.
Sue, who had organized the party showed the manager of the restaurant, Zoe Ellis, their winning ticket to double check it. An attempt was made to find a lotto agency that was open but there wasn’t one. Finally, at 8.30pm Lotterywest confirmed their $80 million Australian Powerball win.
The celebrations begin
They’d been looking forward to their Christmas party, but most couldn’t eat their food. Nerves had gotten the better of them, though it didn’t stop them drinking lots of champagne. Zoe even had to help one winner dial her phone as her hands were shaking too much.
One of the lucky Australian Powerball winners is only 18 years old. As the evening passed, family members of the winners arrived to join in the celebrations. It certainly proved to be a Christmas party like no other.
