$64m Winning Lotto 6/49 Ticket Nearly Went Unclaimed

Winning a $64 million Lotto 6/49 prize is fantastic. However, imagine if you failed to claim your winnings in time? That nearly happened to Merel Chlasson from Bas-Caraquet in Canada.

His big win came in the Lotto 6/49 draw held on April 15, 2023. He finally claimed his winnings just 19 days before his ticket was due to expire.

The fisherman had heard people talking about the local win. However, he never imagined that he was the mystery winner. His Lotto 6/49 ticket spent 347 days sitting on his bedroom dresser.

There are many players who decide to store their tickets away and then check to see if they are winners. For Mr Chlasson though, his habit is to wait until a month before they are due to expire. “I never thought I would win big,” said the Lotto 6/49 winner. He doesn’t worry about them too much for that very reason.

How much?

Finally the time came to check his soon-to-expire tickets and a big shock was on the way. Initially, he wasn’t sure if he’d won $64,000 or $64 million.  The winners of an $8.33 million NZ Lotto prize  initially thought they’d won just $8,333.

Then he showed his winning ticket to his partner. Right away she knew that his ticket had won $64 million. Chlasson wasn’t convinced until he went to the Atlantic Lottery Corporation to get his win confirmed.

Same person

Although Merel Chlasson from Canada has won a $64 million Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball prize, he plans to be the “same person. “I don’t want anything big,” he said.

He does plan on retiring after spending 40 years as a crab fisherman and more recently working at a local fish plant. Other plans include helping members of his family.

He may have become a millionaire but he’s still been buying tickets since finding out about his Lotto 6/49 win. Now he’s wondering if any of the other tickets that he’s yet to check are winners
