A woman from Whakatānein New Zealand thought she’d won $1,200 playing NZ Powerball. However, it turned out that her win in the June 22 draw was really $12.25 million.

The lucky player admits she only plays the NZ Powerball draw about once a month. While out running her errands, she decided to buy a ticket, never dreaming it would make her a millionaire.

It was the day after the draw that she had an appointment in town to attend. While waiting, she decided to see if her ticket kept in her purse had won anything. Not only had she not seen the results, but she also had no idea a local ticket had won the jackpot.

It’s much more than that

When her ticket was checked, the winning music everyone dreams of hearing began to play. As she saw the receipt of her NZ Powerball win, her view was that it said $1,250. Then the real value of her ticket was revealed. It had won the $12 million jackpot and another $250,000 prize.

Recalling the moment the truth was discovered, the winner said: “I was really shocked. I was a bit hot and bothered and I didn’t know what to do.”  The NZ Powerball winner joked: “I have no idea how I still managed to go to my appointment after that.”

Blown away

Once the appointment was over, she returned home and called her son to tell him her amazing news. However, she didn’t reveal just how much had been won. Only when her son saw the ticket did he find that out and he says, “I was blown away.”

Mother and son drove to Auckland to collect the winnings. They spent the “surreal” journey discussing how the windfall could be spent. The first purchase wasn’t to be a car or a new home but a new phone for her.

Some celebrating in Auckland followed receiving the cheque. Some more thought is going to be put into how the NZ Powerball win will be used. Home renovations and a helicopter flight around the South Island are planned.
