$1.13 billion Mega Millions Jackpot Won by New Jersey ticket
The long wait for a Mega Millions jackpot win is finally over. A ticket sold in New Jersey, USA, won the $1.13 billion top prize in the Tuesday March 26 draw.
There had been 30 consecutive draws without a jackpot win. The last jackpot winner had been on December 8, 2023. On that occasion, two tickets bought from the same store in California shared $394 million.
Since then it’s been rollover after rollover in the Mega Millions draw. Finally, the first win of 2024 came on Tuesday. Just one ticket was able to match 07-11-22-29-38 and the Mega Ball 4. It’s the fifth largest Mega Millions jackpot.
Massive decision to make
Just who has been lucky enough to land the Mega Millions jackpot isn’t known. Whoever has won the jackpot now has a massive decision to make.
They can either receive their winnings in 30 annual payments spread over a period of 29 years. Alternatively, the lucky winner(s) can accept their winnings as a one-off cash payment of $537.5 million.
Federal and state taxes will have to be paid so if going down the cash payment route, that would leave the successful player(s) with around $330 million.
Lucky state
New Jersey has been a lucky state in which to play the Mega Millions draw. 2020 saw two jackpots won by tickets sold in the state, totalling $325 million. There have been winners in all three decades in which the Mega Millions lottery has been played.
This win beats the previous highest jackpot won in the state. That was six years ago when Richard Wahl won $533 million.
Tuesday’s draw also saw 13 other tickets make their owners millionaires. The next draw is on Friday with a $20 million top prize.
Attention now turns to this evening’s Powerball draw. There was another rollover on Monday and this evening, the top prize is a fantastic $865 million with a cash value of $416.1 million. Could we see nearly $2 million being won in successive nights?
