$110,000 Winning Virginia Lottery Ticket Rescued from Bin
A $110,000 Virginia Lottery prize was won by Mary Elliot on February 24. However, the Buckingham County resident had to search through her rubbish after losing the winning ticket.
Her Virginia Lottery win came in the Cash 5 with EZ Match game. All five of the numbers drawn had been matched by the lucky player. The numbers matched were: 06-13-18-21-25. That selection had been made using important birthdays.
Was she going to be able to claim her winnings though? For a while it looked as that might not be the case.
In the rubbish
It appeared that Mary had thrown away her $110,000 winning ticket. A search through the rubbish ended happily with the winning Virginia Lottery ticket being reunited with its rather relieved owner.
The winning Virginia Lottery ticket wasn’t in the best of conditions. It had some coffee stains and that led to problems when it came to its barcode being scanned.
Had her luck finally run out? The barcode couldn’t be scanned but Virginia Lottery officials came to the rescue. They were able to verify that Mary had bought the ticket, so her winnings were paid out.
Recalling the moment when she discovered her big win, Elliot said: “I couldn’t stop shaking to save my life,"
Not so lucky
While this player was lucky enough to receive her winnings, that wasn’t the case with a woman in California last November. She claimed to have won a $26 million California Lottery jackpot but then said her winning ticket had been destroyed in her washing machine.
The manager of the store where the unnamed player claims to have bought the ticket, said CCTV evidence confirmed her purchase. That wasn’t enough to see the win paid out.
Lottery officials said that if a ticket is lost, then they need to see a photo of its front and back to pay out any winnings. The woman’s claim was denied, and the $26 million jackpot lost. All of which shows why it can be much safer buying your tickets online at a site like Lottery24.
