$100,000 Scratchcard Prize Won By Hospital Patient
When you’re in hospital any good news is appreciated. Debbie Bury from Minnesota, USA, was hospitalised when being given a scratchcard as a present. Imagine her surprise when it won the stage 4 cancer patient $100,000.
Her stay was in the Methodist Hospital which is in Eden Prairie, about 20 minutes away from the city of Minneapolis. Debbie had been diagnosed with four brain tumours and found herself needing surgery.
The Minnesota resident loves American Football, particularly Minnesota Vikings It was a delight therefore when a visitor gave her a Vikings scratchcard. Little did she know just how happy it was going to make her.
A football?
Her scratchcard was a winner but at first her friend thought the prize was a football. That wasn’t right though and a second glance revealed a $100 win. But that wasn’t correct either and in fact she had won $100,000.
The shocked great grandmother thought the scratchcard might be a fake. Her daughter Melissa Cryer recalled the moment the win was discovered. “I just balled. I just could not believe it. It was just amazing.”
John Lingard from Great Yarmouth in England won a £500,000 Thunderball prize a year after having cancer surgery.
Such a discovery led to a fair bit of noise being created. Oncology nurse manager Andrea O’Hearn heard it and thought something bad had occurred. “People were like, ‘What’s happening, what’s going on?’ she said.
A patient winning a $100,000 scratchcard prize wasn’t at the top of her guess list. “It’s not all the time you get joyful surprises on the oncology floor,” added the nurse manager.
Meant to be
The cancer patient says that her scratchcard win was a sign of better luck for her. “It just feels like life is now going to be good. It’s just, it was meant to be.” Debbie commented.
Even better news for the scratchcard winner is that the surgery on her tumour was a success. Doctors believe that will give her at least another six years life expectancy.
