$1 million Winning Powerball Ticket Hidden in Maths Textbook
Usually what you find in a maths textbook isn’t that thrilling. That wasn’t the case for a group of thirty $1 million Powerball winners from Kentucky, USA.
The lucky players all work for or are former workers at the Rector A. Jones Middle School in Florence, Kentucky. They won $1 million in the January 27 Powerball draw by matching the five main balls drawn out. Each of the winning players will receive $24,000 after the payment of taxes.
The Jones 30
It was a day after the Powerball draw that the organiser of the syndicate (who call themselves the Jones 30) realised they’d won $1 million. Wanting to protect their winning ticket she decided to store it away in a maths textbook. After all, as she says: “No one looks in a maths textbook.”
For over eight years the syndicate have been playing the Powerball draw. They have been using the same numbers since 2019 and finally their selection has paid off.
Drawn out of a hat
When people continually use the same set of numbers they often have special meaning to the player. Not for the ‘Jones 30’ though. Two of their members simply pulled them out of a hat but they needed two attempts before getting their final selection.
“At first, we didn’t have the right amount of numbers to choose from, so we drew again. Thank goodness we did,” said the syndicate leader.
Some of the members of the syndicate say that they want to invest some of their Powerball winnings. Others want to make home renovations or go travelling. One of the winners commented: ““A lot of us have gone on trips together, we’ve had babies and grandbabies over the years.”
They added: “We always have so much fun. It’s just cool to win as a group and share this experience.” The syndicate also plans to keep playing the Powerball draw.
2024 began with a ticket sold in Michigan winning a $842.4 million Powerball jackpot. It’s not been won since and tomorrow’s jackpot is $228 million.
